Director of Payments

ROLE SUMMARY:
As the Director of Payments (Business Development), your focus will be to ensure that our business has all the necessary payments partners, relationships & operational expertise to drive our ambitious growth plans. You will be based out of Limassol, Cyprus on a hybrid working arrangement.
You will ensure that we have all the necessary payment options to drive great customer experiences across a range of global .com and other markets. You will lead the hunt for, and delivery of, the right processing partners and ensure that our performance with payment partners is constantly optimised.
You will ensure that we comply with all relevant payment industry regulations and partner internal policies and you will manage relationships with Payment Service Providers (PSPs) to ensure optimal payment flows, minimizing risks, and maximizing operational efficiency, with a focus on the high risk area.
This role is essential to ensure we comply with jurisdictional requirements and we deliver a seamless payment experience for customers across multiple regions. The business development focus will be on identifying suitable PSP (and other) partners, and optimising our relationships & operational capabilities to ensure maximum returns, from these PSP relationships. You will also have responsibility for ensuring that various sites and products supporting the payments function are built and maintained to a high quality standard.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Business Development
- Manage pipeline of opportunities to ensure strong pipeline to grow across multiple locations.
- Manage a team of business development managers to ensure that we have a strong pipeline of PSP & financial partners.
- Ensure adequate training in place to develop a team of Business Development execs, focused on multiple markets.
Payment Service Provider (PSP) Relationship Management:
- Establish and maintain strong, strategic relationships with multiple PSPs to optimize payment options and enhance customer experience.
- Negotiate contracts and manage SLAs with PSPs, ensuring that services provided meet the business’s operational needs and performance expectations.
- Monitor and review the performance of PSPs regularly, ensuring competitive fees, high success rates, and quick settlement periods.
- Work closely with PSPs to address any issues related to transactions, disputes, or technical integrations
Payments Operations & Optimization:
- Oversee the end-to-end payment process, ensuring smooth and efficient payment flows for deposits, withdrawals, and refunds.
- Analyze transaction data to identify trends, optimize payment acceptance rates, and reduce operational costs.
- Collaborate with the tech team to streamline payment gateways and ensure seamless PSP integration and maintenance.
- Develop strategies for introducing new payment methods that align with customer preferences in different markets (e.g., mobile wallets, cryptocurrencies).
Payment Network Relationships:
- Oversee a team of Payment Network Relationship Managers that are responsible for identifying potential PSP partners, onboard them and ensure that best commercial terms are reached.
- Manage relationships over time, to maximise lifespan and performance of identified partners.
- Maintain end to end communication with PSP partners to ensure compliance with signed contracts.
- Monitor PSP performance and escalate issues when needed.
Compliance Management:
- Ensure all payment operations are in full compliance with local, international, and industry-specific regulations (e.g., anti-money laundering (AML), Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, and data protection laws like GDPR).
- Stay updated with evolving regulations across jurisdictions and implement changes to policies and procedures as required.
- Collaborate with internal teams such as legal, compliance, and risk management to ensure that payment practices adhere to all required standards.
- Conduct regular audits of payment processes to ensure full compliance with financial regulations and internal policies.
Risk & Fraud Prevention:
- Collaborate with the fraud management team to develop strategies to detect and prevent fraudulent activities within the payment system.
- Implement risk mitigation measures in the payment process, ensuring protection against financial fraud and chargebacks.
Reporting & Analysis:
- Provide detailed reports on payment system performance, transaction success rates, costs, and compliance risks.
- Report on PSP performance metrics, identifying opportunities for cost savings, process improvements, or risk reduction.
Collaboration & Cross-Departmental Communication:
- Act as the primary liaison between payment providers and internal departments, ensuring effective communication and quick resolution of payment-related issues.
- Work closely with finance, risk, and IT teams to resolve payment discrepancies and to support reconciliation processes.
Website Oversight:
- Ensure that various sites supporting the payments function are built and maintained to a high quality standard.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- 10+ years experience in the Payment Sales & Business Development Payments / PSP or Payment Operations space
- Strong understanding of payment systems, payments business development, regulatory compliance in the gambling industry, and experience working with multiple PSPs. Alternative licence experience is valuable.
- Demonstrated experience managing payment operations
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills for managing external providers.
- Analytical skills to assess payment data and drive decision-making.
- A solid understanding of fraud prevention, chargebacks, and risk management strategies within payments.
- This role requires a blend of strategic thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and strong relationship management skills to ensure both compliance and business efficiency.
